A worked case
A launch is marketed as a chance to get in early. The early buyers were earlier than the advertisement. Their unlock arrives as the public starts buying. The early price was their advantage, not yours.
Early coins
You send money first. The tokens arrive later, or vest. The project has your money before you can leave.
The dump
When the cliff hits, early buyers sell into the new crowd. A listing day spike is their exit as much as your entry.

Early for them
The 2017 initial coin offering boom sold tokens to the public with a document and a wallet address. A large share of those tokens went nowhere, and regulators spent the next years bringing cases. Later launchpads and presales repeated the shape with a kinder interface: a cheaper price for the early buyer, a public listing afterwards, an unlock when the early buyer can sell. You, reading the announcement, are often not the early buyer. You are the public.
The schedule is the product. A discount only helps the person who can sell to someone else at the higher price. If your purchase lines up with their unlock, you are the higher price. Read the dates. If the dates are not in the document, the document is a poster.
