Lightning and bitcoin payments
Lightning is a way to pay quickly by updating a private channel, and settling on Bitcoin only when needed. The speed is real. So is the way people lose funds.
The fast payments sit between two chain transactions. If someone else holds the channel, they hold the control.
A worked case
A wallet app lets someone pay instantly. The app holds the channel. The company pauses withdrawals over a weekend. The bitcoin chain is fine. The channel they were using was a firm's ledger.
A channel
Two sides lock bitcoin in a channel and pass updates. The chain does not see every coffee payment. It sees the opening and the closing, if those happen.
How the money gets stuck
Your channel partner can go offline. A wallet can mismanage the backup. A service that holds the channel for you is a company again.
If you do not know who can close the channel, you do not know who can take or stop the money.
A 2016 paper, and a channel somebody else may hold
In 2016 Joseph Poon and Thaddeus Dryja published The Bitcoin Lightning Network. The idea is a payment channel. Two sides lock bitcoin on the main chain, update a private balance many times, and touch the chain again when they close. A cup of coffee does not need its own block. The speed is real. The chain sees the opening and the closing, not every sip.
The losses are also real, and they are mostly ordinary. A channel partner can go offline. A backup can be wrong, and an old backup can be punished by the protocol if it is published late. A wallet that holds the channel for you, so you do not have to think about any of this, is a company with a balance in its database. If that company pauses withdrawals, your lightning payment app is an exchange again. The paper's design and the app in the shop window are not the same object.
This page does not tell you how to open a channel. It tells you to ask who can close it. If the answer is a logo, you do not hold the bitcoin. You hold a claim.

These links are the record. They are not a recommendation, and they are not instructions. A news story or a court paper can still be wrong about a detail. The check does not change because a famous name is in the story.

Open a question. The line is about this topic. It is not a verdict that anything is safe.
The app, if it is custodial, plus routing fees.
The channel partners, and the app's software.
The partner who can close, or the company that custodies the channel.

Is a custodial Lightning app the same as holding your own keys?
No. If they hold the channel, they hold the control.
After this you can describe a Lightning payment without pretending the channel is the same as a cold wallet.
