Open interest, volume, and smart money
Open interest is how many derivative contracts are still open. Volume is how much traded. Smart money is a label someone put on a wallet. None of these is a person who owes you a profit.
Open interest is how many contracts are still open. It is not a signal that belongs to you.
A worked case
A dashboard circles a wallet and calls it smart money. A person copies it. The wallet was a market maker, or it was early and is leaving. The label was someone else's caption.
The numbers
Rising open interest means new positions, not automatically a direction. Volume can be washed. A large trade is large. It is not wise.
Wallet labels
A tracker calls an address a fund or a whale. The label can be wrong, late, or an advertisement for the tracker. Following it is copy trading with extra steps.
Use the numbers to see crowding and activity. Do not use them as orders.
A label on a wallet
Open interest is how many derivative contracts are still open. Volume is how much traded. Both are numbers. Neither is a person who owes you a profit. Rising open interest can mean new bets in both directions. It does not tell you which side is about to be right. Commentators attach a story anyway, because a number with a story is a video.
Smart money is the same move one level down. A dashboard circles a wallet and sells you the circle. The wallet may be a market maker, an insider unlocking tokens, or a fund that is about to be Three Arrows. The label is cheap. Chain analytics firms do real work tracing stolen funds for police. That work is not the same product as a Telegram channel's arrow on a chart.
Use the number if you know the unit. Do not use the caption someone else put on a wallet. They are paid if you follow it. You are paid only if you are lucky, and luck is not in the dashboard.
Read it yourself
These links are the record. They are not a recommendation, and they are not instructions. A news story or a court paper can still be wrong about a detail. The check does not change because a famous name is in the story.
Apply the check
Open a question. The line is about this topic. It is not a verdict that anything is safe.
Whoever sells the dashboard.
They do, by choosing which wallet to circle.
Your copy, when the wallet does the opposite.
Check yourself
Should you trade because a labelled wallet did?
No. The label is not a reason, and you do not have their entry.
After this you can define open interest without turning it into a buy signal.
